18th October 1985 : passport separation anxiety

Later than normal start today, so nowhere near as painful getting out of bed and showered as previously.

Drove all day; misty and cold to start, then into thawing sunshine. Drove through vaguely desert landscape of hilly regions and farmland. Bought two cakes for Myrta’s birthday and 25 candles, explaining to the shop owner what I wanted by pointing my finger in the air and blowing. Finally, into campsite on Madrid's outskirts.

Kelvin, Nikki and Vicki headed off into the city to meet up with Ton and Ben - they had left earlier with all our passports to get visas - while dinner preparations began around a campfire. Curry turned into chili with the addition of chili powder by mistake: pork, peach, banana, pineapple, yoghurt and milk with rice and salad. Everyone started to worry as dinner time approached and the others weren't back yet Decided to eat at 8.30pm even if they hadn't returned - they hadn’t, so we tucked in. Myrta’s birthday cakes locked in cab, though, so denied that treat until three forlorn figures returned without Ben and Ton.

Vicki, Bob and I stayed up late around the fire, every now and then looking up in the hope that our missing travellers would appear. Eventually to bed. Gave Bob enough time to get snug and warm and then demolished his tent to wails of “You’ll be sorry!”

Shadowy human figures wandered around the camp perimeter while cats stalked the grounds, trying to get into the garbage.
