19th October 1985 : passport separation anxiety 2

Nikki and Kelvin went back into town to try to find Ben and Ton and our missing passports. Some fellow travellers went for walks, some into Madrid. Vicki, Geoff, Bob, Myrta, Mark and I stayed around the truck until Bob finished a mammoth letter to Karen.

I then went walkabout for postage stamps and discovered a small underground market that could supply all our needs for a three-week new-passport stay if we can't find Ben and Ton! (Remember, this is pre-mobile phones.)

Meandered back to camp to meet Kelvin and Nikki, but they hadn't returned. Everyone now becoming anxious. Then, just before 1pm, a familiar female voice said: “Look who I found!” Anne with Ton and Ben in tow. They and our passports were safe but their visa hunt had failed. Plan C...

Nikki and Kelvin then returned so we packed up and headed south. We drove all afternoon and camped on rough ground below a ruined hacienda with a deep well enfolded by grape vines. Decided to sleep out despite the rocky ground. Myrta and Markus cooked another delicious dinner eaten around anoter campfire.

Vicki took some of my Vegemite and secreted it in Ben’s toothpaste, whispers about her plot carrying around camp until everyone was giggling in anticipation. But Ben didn’t brush his teeth! So we'll have to wait. Stayed up late again after spectacular red sunset.

Climbed the hill to my tent and was just crawling in when a shooting star arced across the sky.
