9th April 1986 : Pizza and Port

Into Lusaka early for four hours of discovering the city's highlights: 8 letters waiting for me at the post office for 8 letters! Jim and Kel’s attempt to get a black-market rate of 9.4 Zambian Kwacha for one US$1 nearly landed them in the drink, escaping more serious consequences than police questioning in a back room only through bluff and bluster.

Lusaka consists of one main street lined with airline offices, banks and small stores and supermarkets selling a small selection of goods, many from South Africa, including wines, and an interesting assortment of condiments, soup mixes, and eggs. Nikki and Kel told us this was a big improvement on what they had previously been able to buy here. Very few souvenirs so no worries about running out of money. Tucked into delicious pizza for lunch before heading to our campsite when I spent the afternoon writing.

Port around the fire after dinner, drawing in Per and Hans, Geoffrey absolutely gone in a very short space of time, with a bottle of wine to help him along. The size of the fire crowd grew with the alcohol consumed, resulting in riotous background noise for the four of us on the truck.
