11th October 1985 : D-Day

D-Day!

Pandemonium: raced around London checking on my insurance claim, getting new Spanish visa and a new student card (this treasure will save me lots of money and nobody needs to know that I’m not a student). Staggered with my pack to East Putney station, where I saw a Portsmouth bus driving away. Nearly cried. But not my bus, and I had somehow made it: 12.20pm for 12:30pm departure.

Exhausted but everyone - 18 others from 6 countries - friendly and encouraging. Expect it will take a while for the shellshock of the last couple of days to wear off.

Bussed to port for ferry to France, where we went to see the terrible Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds movie City Heat.

Camped in the mist beside a campground closed for winter, I bedded down on the truck. An alarm clock went off in someone’s locker in the early hours, producing groans from the four truck sleepers. Fellow traveller Adri found the rude awakener and turned it off.
