31st March 1986 : Marching and Dancing On

Published on 1 April 2026 at 19:30

Woke to a grey morning, the mist in a moist layer seemingly inches above the truck and threatening to dampen our breakfast. We ate to a wonderful dawn chorus that sounded like rain on the tarpaulin before we started to identify different bird calls.

Drove on, stopping to investigate an ant highway across the road. This comprised an interesting system of mounds of soil like hotels connected by tunnels allowing safe passage for the queen and her soldier ants. As we watched, we raised our feet jerkily from the insect-covered ground in an imitation of some of the dances we've seen on this trip to avoid ants’ pincers.

Struggled to stay awake during the afternoon drive. Climbed into the crows' nest late in the day for a great view of thorn trees and a new style of house – mud bricks with wooden poles finished with a flat roof.

in movements similar to some of the dancing we've seen.
