15th January 1986 : Speeding Along At Last

Published on 15 January 2026 at 10:08

Hard morning drive and I began to think that these jarring roads would go on forever. The "best" road was just better enough to allow for some disturbed sleep and just wide enough to prevent us being inundated with debris through the truck sides. And then we hit good, flat road and we reached a speed that seemed reckless after our crawling tempo of the last days.

Everyone was ravenous when we stopped to shop, making beelines to bananas and bread, and exhaustion put us all to sleep after lunch as the truck raced along.

We made a late afternoon photo stop at a village selling firewood, where Nikki played with cute babies. One woman had facial scarring covering all her cheeks, fanning out from her mouth.

Bob lost Karen’s tape out of the crows’ nest so set about recording a new one when we got to camp; the new one lacked the spontaneity of the original - a shame. Nikki cut my hair - I've decided to leave the growing – maybe – for when I get home. Wine lubricated discussion of religion round the fire with Jeff to end the night.
