10th November 1985 : First Truck Birthday

Woke up to find my sandals missing and ranted a bit trying to find them (later found that Hassan was wearing them).

Everyone surrounded Kelvin and Nikki’s tent and burst into happy birthday at 6am. Nikki later commented that our timing was superb and that was why she didn’t join in the singing!

Baked beans for breakfast, being Kelvin's favourite. Yum!

Two hours’ drive through forest. Past a woodcutters' settlement, a collection of tepees made of lengths of wood, black plastic, and old sacks. Some tepees just lean-tos with gaps between the sacks through which the air must whistle on cold nights. Unsurprisingly, the people we saw all looked dirty and weary. Couldn’t imagine living like that and working from such a rough base. Saw a few similar "houses" later as exited the forest.

Back onto asphalt with nothing scenic of note. Lovely and warm. Good shopping stop.

After lunch, something blew into my eye which resulted in all sorts of drama trying to get it out and then bathing it. Very painful even though the good Dr Vicki couldn't see anything. On her advice I spent the afternoon with eyes closed behind glasses, tuned into Meatloaf and had fun lip-syncing and rocking in my seat, being an ostricc of sorts - I can’t see you see so you can’t see me.

Camped in a gully and had a strip wash with Vicki.

After dinner we blindfolded Kelvin and led him to the table where we’d lit the candles on his high-vis pink birthday cakes, popped four bottles of Meske champagne, and Kelvin opened his presents. He grinned broadly, a big kid really. Geoff was in great form too when we gathered around the form. He'll get more entries in our Trip Book (we carried a book in which we wrote quotes and funny events)
