8th November 1985 : Moroccan Moonscape

Vicki said they missed me around the fire last night, which felt good. They were smoking pot again and had a bit of a rage by the sound of things.

Drove on gravel for about an hour through a hard, almost desolate landscape, mostly flat but rising to hills on the horizon. Passed through another mud village, dodging palm fronds and olive trees along narrow streets. Back on asphalt we entered a moonscape of weird dirt hillocks in straight rows. We thought they might be a strange natural erosion phenomenon, but Hassan told us they were centuries-old vertical-shaft water wells, which explains their neat, lined appearance. Later we passed natural but small sand dunes and some corrals walled with 30cm-high reeds enclosing small areas of sand. Old animal enclosures now inundated with sand or some attempt to stop the sand shifting? Don't know.

Eventually drove into Meske Oasis where we dropped off most of the group. This is a very touristy spot with swimming pool full of fish and  a canal for washing in. There was a gorgeous grotto off the main pool under an overhanging cave.

Shopped with Geoff, Myrta and Marcus, then back to the oasis where I washed me and my clothes. Then I sat by the pool soaking up the sun and inactivity.

Drove several kilometres out of Meske to camp. Helped Ann with dinner - actually took over, with her permission - kebabs of meat marinated in olive oil, vinegar, soy, mustard, mustard powder, grated ginger and mixed herbs, precisely skewered with tomatoes, onion and capsicum., served with rice and bread Everyone declared them delicious.

I finished with a terrible backache, so went to bed early again though back on the truck again.
